A Journey Rooted in Family and Passion

For Francis, cooking has always been a deeply personal endeavor. Growing up in Los Angeles, he found his inspiration in his grandmother’s kitchen, experimenting with flavors and recipes that ignited his love for creating food. “I started cooking with my grandma,” Francis shares. “When people tried the food we made, they would tell me how great it was. That’s when I realized I had a passion for this.”

His journey in the restaurant industry began humbly as a prep cook and grew into a career fueled by dedication and creativity. After years of honing his craft, Francis opened Izakaya Tora, where his vision of combining sushi, yakitori, and other Japanese delicacies into one exceptional dining experience came to life.

Why West Hollywood?

Choosing West Hollywood as Izakaya Tora’s home was no accident. “Irvine didn’t have much nightlife,” Francis explains with a laugh. “West Hollywood, on the other hand, has this amazing vibe. It just felt like the perfect place for the kind of restaurant I wanted to create.”

The bustling energy of West Hollywood provides the ideal backdrop for Izakaya Tora, where guests can enjoy a tranquil yet modern atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for an intimate dinner or a late-night bite, the ambiance is as inviting as the menu.

Francis has cultivated a family-like team that plays a vital role in the restaurant’s success. “We’ve got about 16 employees, and many of them have been with me from the start,” he says.

This close-knit dynamic extends beyond work hours. “We celebrate birthdays together, eat together after work, and really look out for each other,” Francis shares. “It’s not just a job; it’s a home for all of us.”

Francis also emphasizes the importance of treating employees with respect. “If you take care of your team, they’ll take care of you,” he explains.

Adapting to Challenges and Looking Ahead

Running a restaurant in today’s economy is no easy feat, but Francis is focused on adapting to the challenges. From leveraging delivery platforms like Uber Eats to embracing the power of social media, he’s finding creative ways to keep Izakaya Tora thriving.

“Social media has been a game-changer for us,” Francis says. Platforms like Instagram and Little Red Book have introduced the restaurant to new audiences, particularly among Chinese customers who often come in after seeing photos of the food online. “People really do eat with their eyes first,” he notes.

Looking ahead, Francis is committed to refining the Izakaya Tora experience rather than expanding too quickly. “It’s about staying true to the concept and giving people an experience they’ll remember,” he says.
