Emporium Thai: A Family Legacy of Authentic Southern Thai Cuisine in Los Angeles
Discover how Emporium Thai brings the rich flavors of Southern Thailand to Los Angeles, offering a menu steeped in family tradition and culinary excellence.
A Family's Culinary Journey from Thailand to Los Angeles
In 1990, the Sungkamee family embarked on a life-changing journey from Southern Thailand to the United States after winning the Green Card Lottery. As the youngest of 12 siblings, John Sungkamee grew up in a household where cooking was an integral part of daily life. "Growing up in a big family, everyone learned how to cook at a young age," he recalls. This deep-rooted passion for cooking laid the foundation for what would become Emporium Thai.
Upon arriving in the U.S., John's first job was in the restaurant industry. He later pursued higher education, earning both a bachelor's degree and an MBA. In 2000, an opportunity arose to open a restaurant in Los Angeles. "I decided, you know what, let's open a restaurant," John says. His vision was to create employment opportunities for his siblings, all of whom shared a love for cooking. Thus, Emporium Thai was born.
Signature Dishes That Define Emporium Thai
Emporium Thai's menu features a variety of standout dishes that have captivated the palates of Angelenos. One such appetizer is the Phuket Wings, Thai-style buffalo wings cooked with a medium spicy Southern curry sauce—a cherished family recipe passed down through three generations. For entrees, the Southern Curry combines jicama, basil, and bell pepper in a unique Thai Southern curry, offering a taste of the family's culinary heritage. Seafood enthusiasts often gravitate toward the Crab Fried Rice, celebrated for its rich flavors and generous portions of premium crab meat.
Embracing Community Engagement
The restaurant's commitment to quality and community has garnered attention from celebrities like Cardi B, Anderson .Paak, and Akon, who have not only dined at Emporium Thai but also shared their experiences on social media. Even K-pop star Lisa Blackpink, who made her acting debut in the third season of HBO's "The White Lotus" as Mook, also paid a visit to Emporium Thai earlier this year. Such endorsements have amplified the restaurant's reputation, making it a must-visit destination in Los Angeles.
