Yaya Tea: A Sushi and Bubble Tea Success Story
Discover the story behind Yaya Tea, a family-run sushi and bubble tea spot known for fresh ingredients, creative rolls, and a warm, welcoming vibe. Learn how Maggie Kwong helped turn her parents' dream into a thriving local favorite.
What started as a college side hustle for Mindy Kwong has evolved into Yaya Tea, a neighborhood favorite offering fresh rice balls, bubble tea, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The journey from a single shop in 2008 to multiple locations today is a testament to resilience, family bonds, and a passion for connecting with the community.
“My sister Mindy started Yaya Tea while still in college, with help from our family,” shared Maggie Kwong, a partner and co-CEO. “She had no prior food industry experience but poured her heart into creating something unique. Over time, the business grew, and our family joined forces to expand and elevate the brand.”
Maggie herself joined Yaya Tea after working in a corporate role, bringing with her an entrepreneurial spirit shaped by years of helping with family businesses. In 2018, the family formalized their partnership, combining their skills and dedication to make Yaya Tea a standout in the competitive bubble tea market.
A Unique Take on Comfort Food and Bubble Tea
Yaya Tea is celebrated as the first shop in New York to offer rice balls and bubble tea under one roof. The rice balls—Japanese comfort food made fresh to order—are a signature offering. “Unlike pre-made rice balls found in supermarkets, ours are warm and customized, with fillings that make them both comforting and convenient,” explained Maggie.
Another standout is the Boyfriend Drink, a mango-lychee white tea with a fun backstory. “When the business started, Mindy offered customers the chance to name drinks after they’d ordered ten. The Boyfriend Drink got its name from a playful idea, and now it’s one of our bestsellers,” Maggie said with a laugh.
For first-timers, Maggie recommends pairing the rice balls with their Jasmine Milk Tea, a floral and creamy delight, or exploring the secret menu filled with creatively named options like “Time Machine” and “Superpower.”
A Family That Grows Together
Mindy’s talent for building authentic customer relationships has been a cornerstone of Yaya Tea’s success. “Our customers have grown up with us. We’ve catered their weddings, birthdays, and baby showers. Some of them even work for us now—it’s like a big extended family,” Maggie shared.
That same sense of connection fuels their commitment to quality and innovation. Yaya Tea recently introduced menu additions like Bulgogi Rice Balls and seasonal drinks such as Rose and Winter Melon Tea.
Focused on the Future
While many businesses prioritize rapid expansion, Yaya Tea is taking a different approach. “Our focus right now is on strengthening our existing stores and improving from the inside out,” said Maggie. “We’re introducing more gluten-free and healthy options, making sure we’re the go-to spot for quick, fresh bites.”
Expansion is on the horizon, but only when the timing feels right. “We want to grow organically and stay true to the values that got us here,” Maggie said.
